well, good matchmaking is key. but what he does in the ring is just as important as who he's in there with. he has not maxed out his potential yet. far from it. doesnt mean he's atg who's caught some bad breaks. but he can be much better than what he has shown.
That does look pretty bleak. If he's going to be stubborn with his amateur style he's going to be in for a real disappointment. Pretty stupid move on his part.
Glad do see respectful Pavlik fans here. Nothing to be ashamed of, he'll be back, and it's always a good thing to clean out the bandwagon from those who only took the winner ride, trust me! :thumbsup Now my question to the "other" Pavlik fans: according to many of you, Kelly was supposed to become some monster at 170lbs to knock Hopkins out, but the weight became "too much" so quickly after the fight, with Bernard "badly outweighing Kelly" fight night. So came the conclusion when Pavlik entered camp at 185, it was a sign that LMW Martinez is "going out on a stretcher". And once again it turned around so quickly: badly outweighing Martinez at 178 was actually bad for Kelly, because he was "drained". So which one is it? Too much weight or too little weight?
Kelly needs new everything ....Most middle weights have some solid muscle tone ..this dude had none...I believe he's not being coach right.
From that interview, it sounds like the only thing he is even considering changing is his weight class. His limited style + his very limited team will = disaster at 168. If he wants to continue, he should at least try hooking up with a real trainer & going to a Big Bear type place where their is really nothing to do other than train. As much as I can't stand him as a fighter, I don't want to see the guy ruin his life. If even 1/4th of the rumours are true, he is on his way to doing just that.
i can't lie. i thought the 185lb weight coming into camp wasnt a bad thing b/c i was told it was due to hitting the weights and not b/c of some ricky hatton weakness for little debbies and fried food. but if it were not specific weight training and it was just laying in the gym putting on muscle you are going to have to boil off to make your target weight then maybe he should keep it in better check pre-camp. dropping 25 1/2lbs and then rehydrating 18lbs probably isnt doing yourself any favors. and as i said earlier...THIS IS NOT WHY HE LOST. but, its probably not the best habit to get into. edit to answer your question b/c i'm not sure i did. i think he can make mw and make it healthier than he did. its just being a bit more disciplined pre-camp. at 170...there was just too much hopkins as opposed to too much kelly.
Boo~ Not exactly accurate... Kelly was preparing for PW, literally days before the Hopkins announcement... When it became evident that negotiations were way off, TR chose several different opponents, and they ultimately decided on Hopkins. I know this as a fact. First hand.
hey guys, not read through the whole thread but good on you for the loyalty. fighters need fans that stick around and it's nice to see he's lost twice, it happens. bad fighters lose, good fighters lose, great fighters lose. let's hope kelly can pick it up and show he's the latter
Two different fights, two different scenarios. This is not an either/or. In my opinion, which I can never give without getting flamed, he was in much better position to fight Hopkins THIS camp. But the Hopkin's fight also had another factor. Kelly didn't have to lose much weight for that fight, yet failed to get back up to his walk around weight after weigh in, most likely because of the bronchitis and anti-biotics he was on. I have no first hand information but reports were that Kelly was looking "better than ever" with the added weight and had more pop on his punches. He has two choices to make. Lose some muscle and stay at 160 or take his chances at 168.
My point about the weight gain is a pretty simple one, so I'm surprised people try to twist it around and act like I'm knocking Martinez. On December 19th, on a strictly physical level, Pavlik looked pretty good. He just looked like a huge middleweight. Not only that, but this was also after a long lay off and a short camp. Right after the fight Arum said he wanted Pavlik back in the ring no later than mid-April, and everyone pretty much knew the opponent would be either Williams or Martinez. Between mid December and mid February Pavlik blew up to 190 pounds. Under the circumstances that makes me just go What The ****atsch
well, there ya go. was there a concern about the added weight knowing it was going to have to come off? i'm not talking about the first day of camp but as the weight was being put on? this isnt a rhetorical question b/c i really don't know.
Little Debbie is easier to take off than muscle. Fat is the first thing the body burns through. I was worried about the muscle all along. I let myself get 'lulled' by the reports that his weight was 'on target' but it always nagged at me that they weren't really accounting for extra muscle. That has to be starved off. No way around that.
