Well -- I just went through and deleted a bunch of posts off several threads. You know -- the stuff I said while I was busy imitating Nallege's ******ed little sister. And for anyone who gives a flyin' ****, I apologize for acting like a complete moron. I just watched Pavlik/Martinez a second time, and Pavlik desparetely needs to rematch this guy. That was not the best Kelly Pavlik I've seen, but the fight was a lot closer than a lot of people act like it was. Upon first viewing I gave Martinez the first 4 rounds. After watching the fight a 2nd time, I can't justify giving Martinez the 3rd. That means that after 8 rounds Pavlik was up by 3 points. 5 rounds to 3, and factor in the knock down, it's KP by 3 points. All Pavlik needed was 1 of the last 4 rounds. I still don't like the fact that during the first 3 rounds I counted 12 times when KP should have unleashed a right hand, but didn't do it. There were 8 body shots, and 4 head shots, that Pavlik just flat out screwed the pooch on, and that was just in the first 3 rounds. Nor do I like the fact that they were counting on Martinez to tire out, but after 8 rounds it was Pavlik who was huffing and puffing like a steam engine. I've never seen Pavlik get tired before, not even after BHop bounced right hands off his head all night. The weight issue might be the culprit. Sudden and dramatic weight loss reaks havoc on a fighter. We should probably forget about Pavlik dropping Jack Leow. That just ain't gonna happen. If KP is going to stick with Leow, I wish he would at the very least make a personal rule that he does not fight without Miguel Diaz in his corner. Anyone who knows anything about Miguel knows that he is a hell of a lot more than just a cut man. Anyway, I think a rematch would be a very winnable fight, but only if he can get the weight under control.
I have to say that i totaly disagree with the people who say Pavlik should not go for the rematch. He was the middleweight champ and i see it no other way but for Kelly to try and regain his middleweight title. Now that Pavlik has seen first hand what Martinez is about,he can try and make some adjustments in his gameplan(training) for the foot speed and movement that Sergio has. The fight was there for the taking for Pavlik. He did show signs that he can adjust in the middle rounds. He was cut, then lost big in the championship rounds. He gave Martinez trouble at times with his size, and with a good gameplan IMO Pavlik has a shot at regaining his straps. Going to 168lbs right now is not the answer. There are fighters there who can also box well with realy good movement and hit harder then Martinez.Lucian Bute,Andre dirrell,Ward to name a few. If Pavlik is serious about continuing his career then he must go for the rematch. He is still very young and if all else fails and he loses the rematch and still wants to fight on,he should then think about starting over and going to 168lbs. If making 160lbs is a serious problem for Pavlik, then thats a whole nother issue. He might have to move up.But thats to be heard. For Pavlik to continue fighting and just walk away from the rematch and his titles would be the foolish move. I say "GO FOR IT" Kelly... See it no other way.
Pavlik chose Martinez. Not Arum, not Dunkin, not HBO, PAVLIK CHOSE MARTINEZ! And nobody took a fight with Martinez. Martinez took the fight with the lineal middleweight champion of the world!
Boo, you still gotta open a proper "I underestimated Maravilla" thread, free of weight blame, trainer blame, any kind of Pavlik blame or excuse making or analysis of right or wrong. The only one to blame is You for Your over the top posts, and you need to admit Your lack insight and pay Your respect to Maravilla, the better man that night! Other classy fans did, so come on man, man up, do a proper one and I'll put a "Pavlik will be back" line above my avatar for a week! Yes you can, Booradley!
:good Getting closer there... I sure don't envy the grieving process. There were a few nuggets of gold in all that crap during those weeks. You were spot-on with quite a few of Sergio Martinez's flaws & bad habits; as a fan, they've been driving me crazy for years. He is, and always will be, a soccer player in the boxing ring - same footwork, same use of stamina, etc., etc. It was/is a winnable fight and I'm sure that's what Pavlik saw when he chose him as an opponent. The main problem with everyone posting their pro-Pavlik scorecards is that we should instead look at the official scorecards and work backwards from those to see what rounds were the turning points from the judges' perspective. A knockout is unlikely, so for Pavlik to succeed, he has to work off of what the judges liked about his performance... because, now that the narrative is about Martinez, grabbing rounds will be that much harder... ...fights and scoring don't exist in a vacuum, so you're right: the fight plan can't depend on what Martinez might bring to the table; Pavlik has to create the opportunities himself and impose his will on what the judges see. Pavlik showed glimmers of some hard-won ring intelligence that night, but Jack Loew seems hellbent on keeping it away. I've never heard a bad word about Miguel Diaz, though, and may be the best thing that will ever happen in that corner... he's a nugget of gold in all that crap.
darryl1914 (5 comments) posted 1 day, 15 hours ago PAVLIK's personal life will emulate Edwin Valero within 2 years, mark my words. Pavlik will NEVER hold another title nor be a relevant fighter in the Middleweight Division AGAIN!!! Too Slow, No "real" skill, No variety, NO MOVEMENT, He just gets hit over & over again, then when the flurries stop, he'll throw something...Doesn't have the ability to "Stand-in-the-pocket" make you miss then counter with speed or accuracy. My favorite Boxing writer Vivek Wallace had the greatest quote about Kelly Pavlik..."A Rock-em' Sock-em Robot with gloves". I attributed this to darryl b/c i saw it quoted on here. that was a rush to judgment. its not hard to create an account and post this. sorry darryl.
you raise a good point/concern of mine as well. i don't know what goes through kelly's head. i'm sure he's questioning himself. he very well may walk away or if he comes back, never be the same. I'm hoping he uses his loses as learning tools and tries his hardest to right the ship and come back better than before. but this is just a hope. i believe he can.
Of course he can. But first, he must put his demons behind him. Ricky Hatton burned out so quickly and we knew he had issues with the bottle and the weight. An entire environmental change is necessary if the fighter can't do it on his own, that's what I stated after the Hopkins fight. Bernard, Shane, Floyd - these athletes perform so well at the late stages of their career because they are gym rats, always in shape and don't pick up bad habits. Can Kelly beat Maravilla at any stage of his career? That's a whole different question.
sergio looked fantastic. i don't think that was a anomaly either on his part. he had a full camp to become a true mw and when i saw him do his thing at 168lbs i was very very impressed. maybe equal parts surprised and impressed...i just didnt think he would look that good at mw. but you are right bone, more of the same prior to camp will mean more of the same in camp will mean more of the same in the ring will mean more of the same on the cards in a rematch with sergio. the status quo isnt working. i know there have been setbacks w/ kelly's health but what has happened in the ring the last couple years just has a stagnant feel to it.
I think some of the criticism of you has been somewhat unfair. One of Kelly's strengths has always been his physical condition up to the end of the fight. My sources say his legs gave out in the 8th. If that is true, then it is possible we never saw the Kelly we are used to seeing throughout the fight. I'm not a doctor, but if his electrolytes, etc.... were out of whack, that would have been from the beginning. It didn't start in the 8th. No one to blame but Kelly and his team for that and you still have to credit Martinez for being able to take advantage of it. People always claim Kelly looks sluggish when he moves up, but guess what? He didn't weight this much against Bhop. He didn't weigh this much in his second fight with Taylor. I was told before the fight it was very unlikely Kelly would fight at 160 again. I think Kelly needs to starve off the extra muscle or skip a rematch and leave the linear title intact. I'm not sure I want to see him go back for a rematch, possibly win it, and then vacate the next fight. Of course I'll support him regardless, but I don't think he should come back if it is a one fight deal.
