The versions that fought Pacquiao. So yes, a swollen post-tear bicep for Ugás, and Thurman chubby & struggling to boil, and coming off a lackluster performance to shake two years of rust.

I'd actually lean Thurman, despite him losing a close but clear decision and Ugás taking a close but clear decision over the same opponent. Partially because the Pac of 2019 was slightly better than last night's, but more so because styles make fights and class tells when neither guy is 42.

Keith at his best beats him, but Keith coming from a long layoff? Who knows

Oh - and lest anybody ever question my objectivity in scoring on here - well documented how much of a One Time fanboy I am, while I've pretty much had nothing but ill to speak about Ugás for his entire career...and I had their contests scored Pacquiao 115-112 Thurman and Ugás 116-112 Pacquiao. :D

But again - in case there is still anyone in 2021 aside from brand-newbs and brain-dead casuals who DKSA 'styles make fights' and the invalidation of triangle winning theory in boxing:
Doing better and/or winning more rounds versus a common foe is ZERO guarantee of victory h2h against the other fighter being compared. :deal:

Keith wasn't at his best 2 years ago. That same form ought to suffice to dethrone the champ last night. IMO.

I actually think this fight will be next for Ugas. And I think Thurman will win via decision.

What a redemption arc, eh? Almost works out in storybook fashion if you're Keith - instead of handing a venerable hero a rematch defeat in his twilight and becoming wildly unpopular with the fans, you recoup the same amount of face by whooping the largely disliked spoiler that did the dirty work for you.

And this after so many people had written him off as being done in the sport, not having the hunger, being too much of a brooding philosophical head in the clouds yogic crunchy-granola hippy dippy kook.

I posted this in another thread before I saw this one.

The plan from the beginning of PBC in 2015 was to showcase welterweights and try to make one or more of them PPV stars like Floyd Mayweather. Al Haymon has a thing for welterweights. So he promoted as many as he could, built them up and then, as they made names for themselves, slowly began pitting them against each other.

As things shook out, Errol Spence and Keith Thurman were the two who were turning up undefeated. Spence was the guy they picked as the 'star' years ago. Who would be his chief rival was open to question. Thurman ended up beating both Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter to come out on top as the guy they were going to promote as his chief rival.

This was all coming to a head in 2019 when Spence and Thurman signed to fight two "name" opponents in Mikey Garcia and Manny Pac in PPV showcases. These two bouts were intended to be the final launch to create a PPV 'Superfight' (or a series of them) featuring the two undefeated in-house fighters - Spence and Thurman.

Then Thurman was surprisingly beaten by the elderly Pac. And Spence got into his automobile accident. Which derailed everything and could've easily resulted in Spence's death. That was the low point for Hayman's master plan.

Since then, and COVID, they have kind of been "winging it." Spence wanted a good test after the accident and fought Danny Garcia. When it looked like Manny had signed with another outfit, they looked at Spence vs. Ugas, who was another welterweight Haymon heaped on the stockpile he had.

But then they got Pac back, so the plan was to pit Spence vs. Manny. It would've likely been an easy win for Spence, but he was injured in training and needed eye surgery. That threw everything up in the air again. But they had Ugas on standby. So Manny fought Ugas and lost.

With Ugas' win, the door is open now for Keith Thurman to get back in the mix. Thurman has already beaten Porter and Garcia, as has Spence.

If Thurman can knock off Ugas, Haymon's plan will be back in play. So I think Thurman-Ugas is the fight Haymon will try to make next.

If Crawford and Porter do fight next, and Crawford wins, things may shuffle around again.

However, if Porter wins, the last big PBC Welter pairing from this initial group will be Spence-Thurman.

I think it's all back to building toward Spence-Thurman. But Thurman has to beat Ugas.

Will they allow Thurman to smoke a joint in the ring? Makes a difference....

Thurman has been in decline for some time. I think the 2019 version was less hungry than last night's Ugas, who despite being so economical I think edges a close decision win. Don't think it would be a very fun fight, actually, but would be competitive.

2021 Ugas beats 2019 Thurman. Ugas looks better motivated and adapted.

I favor Thurmon over Ugas. Keiths the better boxer.
