You have my word. I'm sort of hanging for his fights with Zaragoza and Vasquez to fall into my lap, but I should be able to do a decent job just off the Davila, Perez, Sanchez and Avelar fights. When I do finally get the Zaragoza and Vasquez fights, I'll either re-edit the Lora compilation or put up another clip.
One of the very best ever, and i don't just mean 'for a come forward fighter', that kind of line applies to the likes of Frazier. Duran had one of the finest defences i've laid my eyes upon. Just watch and you'll see how adept it is in many aspects.
Didn't always show the best defense, but that was more out of disdain for what was being thrown at him than anything else. Whenever he faced someone with arsenal to hurt him he showed very good defense (e.g. Leonard, Hagler, Barkley). I suppose the one real exception being the Hearns fight.
Yeahi agree on that, when he showed his defence for what it truly was in terms of capability, well it was special
i love his defence it has so many intricate tricks he uses. his defence was instinctive so when he could be hurt it kicked in
That's a very good point on him when hurt, even when he doesn't seem as though he is really focusung on his defence too much though, he rolls with shots, taking away the edge, if not the scoring. I can't say enough about his defence to be honest. There was a point towards the end of the Leonard fight where they stood toe to toe, (on a penny), they both threw shots, Leonard missed a flurry, Duran landed.
I'd add Jack Johnson to the list of those mentioned above. From what I've seen and read he was excellent at parrying shots and his movement was good for a big man. Also prime Toney was very good defensively.
At his best, I've never seen anyone do it better than Zapata, though someone like Locche was on the same level.
I've got to say locche for me is the best in this regards, just pushing whitaker into 2nd. I just love locche defence, the way he nonchalantly makes brilliant fighters like cervantes look like utter fools is close to unbelivable. To give off the air of not even trying when pulling of the most difficult and perfect defensive performances is just not right. Another name i'll throw out here that gets little mention when discussing the best defensive fighters is prime roy jones. Sure his defence wasn't conventional and was based almost totally on his athletic ability but the name of the game is to hit and not get hit in return and there is few better at that to my mind
The defensive geniuses are a great favorite of mine too, and I love it when you can see someone like Pernell, Locche, or Ali doing their moves and just knowing that you are seeing absolute genius and perfection as you watch. I'm hoping to put together a video like the one you described at some point, but I'm still working on another one and insanely busy at work right now.
That said, there are a couple of videos I've seen on youtube focusing on defense, although I haven't seen anything in depth like you were hoping for, Cobra.
