Listen to Ray Leonard comment on Benitez and Hearns. "Benitez has," says Ray, "what I call radar." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etcQzDZO-Ik http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7J6OiNFahA&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNXSTBmXe7Y&feature=related
Tyson likes to find a path and charge, but watch how a 38 yr. old Larry Holmes, at least for a while, foils his aggressive pursuit by changing up the angle. He'd given away the first couple of rounds, the rationale I guess to frustrate and tire young Mike. But Larry of course doesn't have the wherewithal to out maneuver him forever, and by 6:10 Mike finally gets to him, and by 7:30 he's outta there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSb4-ejQavw&feature=related
Some nice clips of Pernell Whitaker here. Truly "Sweet"!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G5v_PNsl4Q&feature=related
definitly he was instinctive all the time but when hurt he was like a ghost. interesting a short prime but amazing skills. I love his style his radar is amazing. he is abit but hes not on the level of Pep, Zapata, Whittaker, Locche etc... Tyson is one i rate highly as well Chinx as he came forward bobbing and weaving he was very hard to hit
Johnny Famechon had a very good defense, I really like him as a fighter. Would have been an outstanding fighter if he made more use of his right hand. Here are some highlights from his fight with Vicente Saldivar. Some text book stuff. [YT]ekVseBNblJk[/YT]
cheers for that SS will watch it tomorw im away to bed. ive never seen Johnny Famechon one time i got him mixed up with Ray Famechn who fought Pep they were related though
I've got highlights of his fights with Legra, Harada and Saldivar up on the web, give them a look some time. :good
Graceful is a nice word to describe him. He looks so light bouncing on his feet, almost effortless movement. I love the fact that he was a competent in fighter too. His infighting skills are pretty much the reason he beat Legra.
I agree with you. Guys like Sanchez and Monzon had very subtle, effective defense...not usually grouped with the Benitez's, Locches', Whitakers and Pep's, but they were effective just the same and oh so functionsl. In Monzon's case, his skills were more long term...at times criticised for being "slow" and "stiff"...he retired at the top and was NEVER STOPPED...and was virtually unmarked...as I like to believe that Sanchez would have been similar in subtle, long term defensive skills, had he lived.
I love Benitez's staredowns better than any other fighter's (except possibly for Liston's)..he had an almost theatricallly haughty, arrogant look of disdain that somehow I found very entertaining...like when he was facing the very slightly taller Leonard, he tilted his head back to where he HAD to look down on Ray. Very creative.
I wouldn't mind making a video on boxers' defense at all, in fact I've planned on doing something like that for a while now but haven't gotten around to doing it yet. I've made videos of the hardest punchers and the fastest boxers, perhaps a video on the greatest defensive artists the sport has ever been should follow. Any suggestions would be helpful.
