Can't do anything at home? At least shadow box and run and work on your footwork?

I train at the gym then the ext day im on a downer but on Monday im starting my proper training again for the season, im never in bad shape so itll be quick to get into top shape.

GPater11093, I'm glad you included Monzon in the list of great defenses. Ironically, Monzon is the only one listed above who has no stoppage defeats on his record, though I realize that Whitaker's "ko by" was of a freak nature with that shoulder (?) injury of his leading to that 3 round tko to Carlos B(whatever his name was) a few years ago. Monzon dosent usually get mentioned in threads where great defenses OR great chins are mentioned, but he obviously was superior in both of those categories, if you review his record and the fact that he was virtually unmarked at the end of his 100 bout career.

For that matter Ali was fundamentally wrong in many ways...a great boxing brain can overcome that and capitalize on it.

Monzon fought 'em all and beat 'em all...he may not be so easy on the eyes at times, but you can't argue with effectiveness..there was something there that the casual fight fan always misses or just dosent understand, IMO. There was a cold, calculating efficiency with Monzon and his defensive skills, while not as flashy and spectacular as some others that was, in the long run, just as effective..hell, it was either his chin, or his defense..probably both..but 100 fights and no stoppages..the guy was pretty much unmarked at the end of his career, and anyone else would have probably been stopped in that second round against Valdez in fight #2.

Just watched Monzon vs Benvenuti 1

What i like about Monzons defence is he keeps it at the range he wants so he can defend and attack when he wants. For a tall guy hes unbeatable in the inside very effective.

Monzon was a conservative type fighter..he knew when to back off and lay back as well as when to turn it on.

Just been reviewing my tapes of Locche and Pep.

    Here i go.....

I watched Locche vs Ortiz highlights. It was only about 3 minutes roundbut i saw some moves of Locche, i couldnt tell who was winning just small snippets but Locche got the better of what i saw.

In the fight theres a bit where Ortiz throws a jab Locche side steps it and lands a jab and left hook then bounces back away from another Ortiz jab. Locche looked like he had some good movement and was bouncing around slipping shots and staying out of range. Very nice movement from Locche.

Up close it was quite even with Locche slipping alot of punches but getting over run by Ortizs flurries. Ortiz looked to be out fighting up close but Locches moveemnt was winning him the out side battle.

Willie Pep impressed me as always. I think his defence was based around his footwork. Pep in my opinion has the best footwork of any fighter i have ever seen. He is always perfectly balanced and in a position to throw a punch, although these punches come from awkward angles.

Pep used his lightning fast feet to step away from shots or turn opponents making there punches hit air. He used his feet along with head feints to confuse opponents in what direction he was going. His head movement is very good too but it all comes off his feet work as he moves as his head is moving, its a wonderful sight to see.

Pep is generally critised for not having an inside game. However when Pep does get close he normally throws fast combinations then skips out of the way he dosent stick around in the pocket long.
