Best post in the whole thread. What I find interesting is that people only seem to be judging this off of his KO loss to Tarver in the 2nd round. A past it Jones was hit repeatedly and broke down by Johnson over the course of 9 rounds, he literally got his ass kicked and loss every round, that is not an example of a bad chin, but rather one that is average (give or take). If he had a china chin he would've been gone much sooner. And often since the KO loss to Tarver overshadows his win over Tarver people often forget that Roy was in a tough fight, very removed from his prime, yet he took all of Tarvers shots (his face was proof at the end) and he came on strong in the end to clinch victory. Yet that is never discussed. Bottomline, if you could land the right punch it is possible for him to fold, especially now. the punch that Lou De Valle landed was more powerful than the punch Tarver landed, and it was at such a bad position. It happened at the very END of the round, Roy got up right away and was not woobled, but you could tell he had some cobwebs he had to clear out in his head. Was a BIG shot, it was loud when it impacted. The bell rung and he went on and handly defeated him. The way he got hit by the punch was stupid, he was in a dumb posiiton doing something stupid.

Anyone who has really invested time to see if he took punches prior to being KTFO by Tarver in the 2nd fight would realize that he did take shots. Nothing where it was constant damage, but he took shots and ate them fairly easy. average, give or take type of chin. He fought some bombers and got through with ease in his prime.

Add on to the fact he was KO'd in the 2nd fight. The 1st fight is completely forgotten, in that fight he took all tarvers hits. Tarver made changes though, I guess they trained to catch Roy inbetween his punches, since his reflexes was shot. Tarver would throw a blind hard punch when Roy would make his classical mistakes of punching from way out of range, since he didn't have the reflexes he wouldn't be able to avoid, he didn't even see the punch coming. lol they both had their eyes closed.

At 160/168, it's very good. Sorry but i don't see anything that shows his chin is anything less than good there. He was never wobbled or stunned. Yes, he had lightning reflexes, but he still got tagged good now and then. You can't avoid getting hit by the best fighters in the world for 12 rounds. Toney and Hopkins both landed good shots, nothing happened. Toney iced Nunn with one or a few shots.

At LHW, it's a bit more doubtable. Still, you have to consider that his 20lbs of muscle weight loss after coming back from heavyweight plus the high age (35) had severely weakened him. He still went the distance with Tarver twice, taking many shots in the process. But he took on all comers for many years and also took a few bombs from Ruiz, a legitemate heavyweight, so i think in his prime, his chin is excellent.

His durability is not Hopkins/Toney-a-like, but mind you, those two are amongst the most durable middleweights of all time. Toney is as good as impossible to knock out, Peter and Rahman showed that.

He was KOed by a guy who a 90% KO ratio , 5 months later he fought Glen Johnson ,Which in my opinion 5 month is too soon to be fighting after be KOed, was KOed a second time .

all in all Roy's chin is fine "**** happens"

Roy Jones has a Glass Jaw. He was brutally KOed by Tarver and Johnson neither of which are Power Punchers. He was also knocked down by Lou Del Valle. If he ever fights another fighter his own size he will get knocked out again.

Interestingly Tiger was a fighter who seemed almost completely perfect in terms of ability/attributes - but with one big problem, his chin.

Arguably the same as Jones, of course.

I would say he had an average chin. Far from granite but also just as far from glass. He took some good shots before age and losing the weight came into play though.

when a guy spends so much effort on not getting hit it means only that he can't afford taking a single clean punch and that means that chin's made of pure glass.

I agree with this. Not saying he had glass chin, just average chin.

I watched almost all Jones' fights since he beat Hopkins and I have always wondered he fights the way he does - very reluctant and poor finisher. He seems to be fighting with the mentality that if he gets hit on the button, it will be good night. At that time I could not understand because I always thought he had a pretty solid chin. But now all things transpired and we all know why.

I'd agree with this. I disagree with those saying his chin was untested in his prime - he took hard shots from e.g. Hopkins, Toney and Ruiz without coming close to going down.

Hard shots that he almost always saw coming, and was able to adjust at the point of impact.
