Gatti Cotto Hagler Frazier Holyfield Those go from my birth to modern day favorite fighters. The bottom five is much harder to do. Any number of about 20 could fill it out. Julian Jackson Juan Manuel Marquez Micky Ward Emmanual Augustus Johnny Tapia Are the first that come to mind today.
* I could probably put wlad in at 12 to be honest, If I were to redo it Id put him there. I kinda thought of him late n just put him in there.... but a more accurate place would be right behind mayweather. * Ya, I have no spots in my top 20 for anyone I never actually followed. I got love for the old timers, but I didnt start watching boxing till 2000.... and since then theres been too many fighters Ive 'won and lost with' so to speak (rooting for them through the buildups, through their careers, feeling happy when they win and bad when they lose) for me to go put some guy I never really experienced in there over any of them. Now, after 20 you would probably start seeing a few names like Hagler or Frazier in there, but they would be few and far between. * Pre Hoya Vargas is my fav fighter of all time He was a savage, yet tried to compose that rage into skill, and did for the most part (pre hoya). Had a bottomless well of fire, pride and will. Behind a decent skillset. Didnt play all this boxing politics crap and went straight after the best because thats who he wanted to fight. Fights with Marquez, Winky, Trinidad, Hoya, Ike, all high level action filled fights. He was the fighter that brought me into boxing and I dont see anyone ever replacing him as my fav.
Yeah when first started watching there was Alan minter John h Stracey , mo hope , dave boy green on English tv and they were my favourites but over the years I have watched and read about older boxers and have been impressed by their skills. Wlad does surprise me really as his fights are not really exciting
Oh, about Wlad, I think a lot of it has to do that when I started watching him, and becoming a fan, he was exciting. I was a Wlad fan pre Sanders. He wasnt boring (imo) back then. And once someone is a fav of mine, I will pretty much be a fan of theirs till the end. His style has changed and ya his fights can be lackluster but Im still a fan because I was a fan back in the day. Truth is hes dropped from my top 4, out of my top 10, over the years..... but hes still one of the 'originals' in terms of who I was a fan of when I first became a fan of boxing. I should put him in my top 10 but I just dont know who I would replace him with. And ya Ive read up and watched some old timers, and I do respect their stories and skills, for sure. And the truth is that I should probably put Hagler and Frazier in my top 20. But just speaking for myself, that respect from reading old stories and watching old tapes doesnt replace (for me) anyone who Ive actually known what its like to root for before a fight, and feel the highs and lows of their career. Just cant compare for me. The closest this gets for me is Benn and Eubank, who I never followed but have seen so much of, and have come to like them so much that I can put them in there, despite me not having been around boxing during their peaks. But I understand those that do like the old school fighters, and Im thankful for fans who get into the fighters who were before their time. Leads to boxing historians and good knowledge of boxings history. :good
