I think the only thing genetic in a fighter would be his build which can mean natural power or speed, all brains are the same from birth aptitude to learn is picked up somewhere along the line.
Pretty sure I disagree with all of that but let me reframe my point. My hunch is that if all boxers had the same work ethic and all worked out as intensely as possible, some would still end up with much better stamina than others.
It’s disappointing for sure....I don’t know if that is popular or unpopular. But I think most of us that have been here 5-10+ years would agree it is lacking in the depth and quality that it once had.
There was an exodus of good posters that left, and a large influx of poor posters. It's even more noticeable in general, which is occupied by nothing but ****.
I have to agree, there is a certain lack of depth here these days. When people bump some of these older posts you see some great threads with really deep analysis. There was also a lot of rap then too, there's always gonna be that, but the quality in general was much better then.
How can you beat a handle like salsanchezfan? The man was an incredible idol! Besides the fact that I don't consider Tyson in the top 10 heavyweight ATGs, I guess there's my giving Holmes more credit for his punching power than some feel comfortable with. Larry never really had a consistent one-punch knockout punch, but his uppercut ruined more than one fighter in the heat of battle, and the same could be said for the overhand. His jab alone could be seen as a power punch.
Boxrec is not a truly extensive force and should not be relied upon as gospel. John L Sullivan is the most dominant heavyweight champion ever, above Louis and Tyson.
When I think dominant heavyweight champion I think of Ali making all those guys look like fumbling losers in the 60s. Tyson certainly had his savagely dominant period, but Ali just had the finesse (not to mention a heart bigger than his whole body). The way Ali moved makes a term like "sweet science" seem completely justified imo. He was that kind of fighter.
That Roberto Duran is a bit overrated. He faulted when he fought elite fighters which is proven. And he fought them at weights where he was solid enough at.. Duran is the fighter where excuses are made for him in his losses to elites, yet when he wins the wins are made bigger than they are.
The Leonard win was to me nearly Ali-Frazier status. Duran looked like a quintessentially great fighter in that fight imo. And he did lose to some great fighters...but I'm wondering if any of them were as good as a young Ray Leonard. I don't think so, as highly as I rate Hagler and Hearns, no.
One of my unpopular opinions would be Pinklon Thomas had a heavier more powerful jab than Holmes though admittedly it wasn’t as quick. Thomas also had a annoying habit/flaw of telegraphing it a bit by loudly grunting just before he threw it.
Not sure I see how any of that would be unpopular (except maybe among the most extreme Holmes fanboys?)
