I don't like him doing it either; but he can get away with it at this level. I'm sure he wouldn't do that against better competition
He's cursed with time (he's 26 with little pro fights) which will limit his "star power". I think he'd be a great fighter if he just coasted on pure skill..once he gets experience and some more technique he should be amazing.
It's true that he can get away with it at that level, but my worry would be that he does it so much that it becomes a habit, and at times during fights in the future he'll naturally lower his hands out of sheer 'body memory'. We'll see how it goes, though. To be fair, 26 isn't THAT old -- it may be more problematic for him than it would be for other people though, because of his specific style. It seems to rely on speed/reflexes, kind of like RJJ and SRL, and those normally start to decline to a bad level at around early -- mid 30's.
Well at 26, he's getting a late break on things. I don't mean to make him sound ancient but unless he gets severly active, he might not see his first big time HBO spot until 30 or so. Not a death knell...but severly hampers his prime time IMO. It's scary to think how many people will miss out on his prime because he got such a late break.
I don't say this too often when it comes to prospects, but I have a feeling Gamboa is going to be a pound for pound star within the next few years. He's already facing excellent opposition for a prospect who's only had 8 fights. Clearly he has the talent necessary to make it big on the next level; speed, reflexes, timing, punch output, accuracy, combination punching, and a solid body attack. The only question marks are his chin, stamina, and heart. We will get the answers to those questions as he steps it up in competition. The fact that he leaves his chin exposed concerns me a little bit, but he'll likely sharpen up his defense and be more careful when he fights more dangerous opponents.
He is good, fast hands and likes to go to the body. Certainly the opponent he was facing was fighting with fear and was very crappy, so that helped him a lot.
Arguably the most 'naturally' talented prospect in world boxing at the moment. I think he has the tools to go a long way and I look forward to seeing how his career plays out.
He has the potitional to e #1 P4P someday. At 26 he's not young but he's not too old. The first impresion that I had of him was that he reminds me of Roy Jones Jr. In that he uses speed/athleticism and power more than he uses tridtional boxing skills. As long as he can use his speed/athleticsm and power I think he will do very well. I would of course like to see how he dose aginst better compotion.
He doesn't remind me of Jones, more of someone like a young Toney, being as he uses less foot movement and has less bounce in his step. He's too flat-footed to be compared to Jones, though he can move. He's all about upper body and head movement.
I see a good fighter, not a great fighter yet. Sometimes he doesn't put much behind his shots. His flat footed fighting style may leave him open to getting caught also. I have seen this happen a couple of times already against limited opposition. He actually reminds me most of Joan Guzman in some ways, the way he puts his punches together. I think he has great natural ability, but still needs to work on sitting down on his punches more for the pros. Definitely a tonne of potential though, could be the next superstar. I wonder though, without punching power, and without quick feet how will he fair vs guys like Juan Diaz? Or with the quick movement and possibly quicker hands of Amir Khan? What are your thoughts?
I agree with comparison of Guzman, when comparing him to a modern fighter that was one that came to mind(though I forgot to mention him last post). Not quite as much movement though. At this point right now, he definitely loses to Diaz, and that is a possible bad style matchup for him in the future period, due to his style. I don't think Khan has faster hands though, in fact I'd say the opposite. Khan is more of a conventional boxer than Gamboa though, it'd be interesting to see how their styles mesh. I see Gamboa, and I notice, despite his flat-footedness, how quickly he is able to close the gap between himself and his opponent. Then again, despite fighting conventional boxers, he is not fighting anyone of Khan's level. To be blunt, I simply have to see more of Gamboa against better opposition to judge accurately.
Hes not young at 26..you figure he'll be fighting cans for another year or two...He can be a p4p in three years and at that time his window of big money fights is shrinking He's not the tightest of puncher but have tremendous speed...Never been a fan of hands down fighters but hes got great reflexes..I love to see his chin get tested
Pretty much my thoughts also. I think Juan Diaz would be a very bad style match up.. An interesting contrast and a very intruiging match up with Amir Kahn. Overall a fighter who has heaps of potential, but needs to face harder opponents before a more accurate assesment can be made. Its very likely also that as his opponents improve, he will lift his game to the next level. Nobody performs to their best against over matched opponents.
