He's one of those amateurs I can't stand watching. Got amazing skill and athleticism, but his style is basically to exploit the point system. Never seen a top fighter turn his back or hit the floor that much. It's like his first line of defense.

I don't see him going far in the pros.

Zavack lost his speed. He was like a different fighter in the Berto fight.

Do you know how much Thurman got?

Zaveck was recently a champion, and Thurman only stepping up for the first time, bear in mind.

With Larry Merchant and George Foreman emceeing this, it's going to be funny no matter what.

That's the main reason I'm tuning in - to hear what kind of un-PC **** they come up with for this fight.

Considering that he is the national hero for a Country of like a Billion fans, technically he is being under paid even at 300,000, statistically/mathematically speaking

Nationalism in China is big, big, big in a huge way. I dunno maybe it has to do with the Culture, or how they are set up Social-Politically, but that being said. Its a numbers game, the more people wanting and willing to see you fight the more money you are worth.

Thats too much IMO I could give a damn what he has done in the Olympics, bottom line Olympic Boxing has had its share of scoring issues corruption and there has been a Massive lack of talent from the US in the last 20 years.

And to top it all off he is starting fresh with Freddy Roach as a pro, things are going to get interesting as you will watch this young man be carefully matched, and never learn a damn thing about defense, and the Amir Khan moment will have by then arrived....

I hope for our sake if he is over rated it gets exposed quickly...

Did Khan make 300,000 in his debut? Did De La Hoya, for that matter?

Granted neither P-Stan nor the UK is a 'country of a billion fans', but a paper medal shouldn't net you a maiden voyage purse of more than what some world champions earn. Being proportionate to your country's population shouldn't be a deciding factor.

Also, we don't know how much of a draw Shiming will be. Anyone who takes gold is going to be somewhat popular in their grateful home nation, but that won't always translate into asses in seats or buying PPV once they go pro.

Fists of Gold has presumably sold out by now, but it was also heavily promoted for a long time and involves some big international players. (including one world boxing champ of Asian descent who is at least big in that part of the world, though not himself Chinese)

How much will Shiming generate when the card is him + a bunch of no-name inexperienced Hans?
