Besides being wrecked by Joe Louis, if he said that, the statement didn't age well. He died in 1994, so he got to see Ali, Liston, Holmes, Foreman, Frazier, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe and the coming of Lennox Lewis. All of whom would have done a number on Sharkey at his absolute best.
I think he said that around 1926-26 just before or after he defeated Wills. At the time, he was probably 100 percent correct.
Yes. Pre Louis that was reasonable given the Willis win when Willis was at the peak of his hype and Sharkey was still green. The implication is he said this late in life though.
Sharkey sometimes had a big mouth. From reading some of the pre-fight coverage of his finale against Louis, he was particularly mouthy before that fight, which is when I believe he made this comment. He got enlightened.
In Memory of Jake, what is it with you? This topic was thoroughly discussed under almost the exact same title in a thread started by you 6/3/2023. For anyone interested the address of the thread back then is https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...-no-black-fighter-could-ever-beat-him.704605/ . The explanation then by SolomonDeedes for Sharkey's statement was the same then as it would have to be now: "His comment before fighting Louis was: 'll flatten him in bout six heats. I always did have the Indian sign on these black boys. Look what I did to Wills and Godfrey and this guy Louis couldn't carry their gloves.'" Why are you trolling this topic again now? Have you got something against Sharkey? Like greynotsoold answered you then in his response to your claim that Sharkey said no black fighters could beat him: " What difference would it make if he did? His career ended almost 90 years ago and he died years ago. What are you trying to imply? Over the last 20 odd years it has become common for black fighters to say that no white fighter will ever beat them. So where does that leave us?" Your response to grey then was "I don't care if he did or not TBH." But here you bringing it up again, so you must care a lot for some reason. If Sharkey was a racist he had ample opportunity to show it in the first Archie Moore-Yvon Durelle fight when Durelle knocked Moore down four times in one round during their first fight in 1958, Sharkey could have stopped the fight and Durelle would have won the light-heavyweight title right there, but Jack didn't. Why bring this up again in an identical thread when it was laid to rest almost a year ago? Maybe you should see a doctor about your memory.
I agree. A very odd poster who has a history of recycling threads, and igniting racial tensions. An example of the former is his most recent Tyson-Johnson thread. He's made that same exact thread at least three times in the past. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/prime-jack-johnson-vs-prime-mike-tyson.626032/ https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/1908-jack-johnson-vs-1988-mike-tyson.645453/ https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...t-jack-johnson-beats-young-mike-tyson.595138/ His reasoning.... a ****ing youtuber of all people, triggered him by saying Jack Johnson would win, and he presumably didn't have the argumentative skills to engage in a debate, so he made the thread to sooth his ego. I wonder how much time this kid has on his hands.
You missed the one in 2020. Four pages. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...-a-black-fighter-could-never-beat-him.643704/
The quote was made in the 20's , based on the fighters from the 20's , from a man in his 20's in the context of the 20's ... unlike many he actually fought Wills and Godfrey without either being handcuffed so context is key.
