He's young and has some skills, he looks like he has more skills than say Miller or Brezeale already. But can he take a punch? He has an almost comically small head compared to the rest of his body, bit like David Price. Also every year he's been a pro he's gained 10lbs, at this rate by the time he's a contender he'll make Miller look like a light heavy.
The only thing Rock is fighting in my eyes is obesity and he is losing badly 12-0. But he's american so they will probably say its borderline and could have either way when he is losing he's feet to diabetes
Ya I saw that, GG nationals right? If im not mistaken he qualifies for the Olympics had he swept the tournament as he was expected to. One shot too, not an accumulation of shots or standing counts -- not an amateur type stoppage just straight up caught and went down shocktingly hard and fast. Ive seen guys in the past stopped like that who had great chins and never showed another chink in the armor again, so its not definitive but ya seeing a guy stopped like that and against an opponent he was supposed to absolutely handle sticks in your head and keeps you skeptical of his chin for a long time going forward and sometimes forever. But I'll tell you what bothers me the most about it was his complete lack of emotion afterwards. Im not saying I wanted to see him bawling like a broad in the ring after, but show SOME disappointment or just.... Anything. That punch completely took all the fight out of him, even if he could have gotten up and tried brushing it off and trying to continue to fight, but nah man, he was ALL SET and wanted no more.I immediately thought of Victor Ortiz after watching it all happen and studying his demeanor afterwards. Not good and thats not really something you can work on or do anything about. Im afraid it told you all you needed to know about him: he was a huge, extremely gifted and talented kid/young man who took to boxing very fast, it all came so easily and naturally to him and up to that exact point probably faced next to no resistance his entire(albeit short) career that when he actually was confronted with a situation that didnt unfold easily, naturally, essentially perfectly in his favor -- he didnt wanna fight and grind for it for even a second and didnt want to waste the smallest amount of effort in trying to right the ship.
Incredibly gifted and talented young fighter, excellent athleticism and coordination for his size, not sure of his exact measurements but.I know he's at least 6'5 tall with seemingly very long arms. Very strong and broad build with a very big frame though seemingly puts on weight(and not the best kind) too quickly and easily. Shockingly fluid and graceful and light on his feet for someone his size and dimensions. Excellent power in both hands and knows how to sit down on his punches and generate a ton of power and leverage on his shots when he wants to, but seens more content boxing rather than banging/punching which is a great thing for most guys especially one as young as Rock and isn't drunk on his own power but at the same time you sense right away when watching him that he isn't in this sprt to hurt people and sometimes seemingly tries to avoid it and gives you the impression he totally lacks a killer instinct. From the little ive seen of him he reminds me a little bit of another great HW from the past besides Bowe and who is also a Philly native: Larry Holmes. Rock has a very good jab and is very skilled both offensively and defensively, but loses focus too often and too easily he doesn't incorporate a lot of his skills and talents together which can lead him to look underwhelming to some and mote special than he probably can achieve to others. Rock has clearly picked up boxing phenomanally quickly and was born with all the -- size, athleticism, coordination, strength, fluidity, intelligence and understanding of boxing, along with this innate ability to learn, develop, and incorporate boxing skills better and faster than most that all scream ATG and remind observers of numerous past HW greats. I mean he truly is special in so many areas and categories that can't be taught that its inconceivable to think he will never reach his potential or win a HW belt but after watching him, repeatedly at that, its almost inconceivable to believe he will even come close to winning a belt and reaching hus enormous potential. So there are clearly flaws aplenty and just like a lot of his strengths, he's seemingly missing or leaves questions about every intangible a fighter pretty much needs just to become a top 100 fighter in their weight class. The greatest potential"boom or bust" HW prospect I think ive ever seen since ive been alive.
Man you are spot on with this and the fighter himself overall imo. I totally agree and can see him being a nightmare for Wilder, they are basically fighters at the exact opposite end of the spectrum from each other and have everything that each other is missing to make a great and seemingly unstoppable fighter. I can see everything you're seeing but I dont have even the slightest chance in being able to explain or articulate any of it.
He was 273¼lbs for his battle with Steven Lyons tonight... https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...armani-rock-vs-steven-lyons-rbr.624200/page-3
That was about the weight he was for his previous fight against Valentine. IMO, that's about 20 lbs more than he should be carrying. Rock is a fairly high-energy type of fighter and he's not a guy who loads up and lets go with big shots early to try to blast his opponent out of there in 1 or 2 rounds. As he starts edging towards 8 rd or 10 rd bouts - I really think he needs to get down to that 250-255 lbs range.
The reliable "Phil Boxing" site has a nice recap of the Rock vs. Lyons fight. The bottom line is that Rock isn't (yet) living up to his potential. "Rock vs. Lyons Rock gets another win but in a dull and uninspiring fashion. Lyons was never in with a chance against the former Elite level amateur star. He was smaller with very limited technique and giving away 63lbs in weight. There was very little in the way of excitement and it was embarrassing that Rock could not get Lyons out of there. Finally in the fourth he took Lyons to a corner and unloaded a few head punches and Lyons slid down and then just took the full count whilst on one knee and showed no inclination to get up. Rock,22, is 6’5” and was 273 ¼ lbs for this fight. That is some way below the 315lbs of the 6’4” Jarrell Miller but is a heavy burden to carry for ten rounds and he does not seem to have the punch power to blow away better class opposition. He was outstanding as an amateur He was US, Pan American and World champion at Youth level and won gold medals at both the US National Championships and the National Golden Gloves. An inside the distance loss to Marlo Moore cost him a place in the US Team for the 2016 Olympics so he has great credentials. Heavy or not he has to be respected. Second loss inside the distance for the 209 ¾ lbs Lyons."
he should fight Fedosov. if they can both get off their asses at the same time. lets start having decent upcoming guys fight each other. i know Fedosov is trekking into the "selling his record because he is past it " territory.
Since the last here - Rock has fought 26-23-3 (21) Raymond Ochieng, knocking him out in 2...and is now set to face 21-11-4 (14) Maurenzo "T. Diddy" Smith on Saturday night @ the Met in Philly. So...I mean...technically he is stepping up in competition...albeit on the most gradual of inclines conceivable...
